George M. Wyckoff, Jr.. was the mayor of Cumberland, Maryland from 1982 to 1990. His tenure as Mayor of Cumberland was marked with chronic unemployment and the exodus of people and the business class. Towards the end of his tenure he raised taxes and fees, a response common at that time of factory closings as a way of getting back lost revenue. However, this move forced more business closings and later resulted in his defeat in 1988. There has been talk of building a bridge in his honor, but those who remembered his administration opposed this move.
